It's three days later and still working...

- So if you want to run a R8.5 server, client, and designer on one box, and designer won't launch from the client, close the client and run designer.exe, then use that to launch the client.
- Once that's done designer appears to then launch from the client, ever more.
- Hope this helps someone later...
